The Department of Veterinary Public Health came into existence on 3rd January 1996 and PG courses (Masters) were started from September, 2002 onwards, initially intake capacity for PG students was one now it is increased to three. From academic session 2011-12 PhD (doctoral) is also initiated with intake capacity of two. The Department is actively engaged in the teaching, research and extension activities. The Departmental activities were appreciated by VCI inspection team. In 2009 VCI issued new syllabus and changed the department’s name to Department of Veterinary Public Health and Epidemiology. The department has excelled in the research activities and has established the ‘State of the Art’ facilities at ‘Centre for Zoonoses’ under Niche Area of Excellence funded by ICAR, New Delhi. The research work targeting ‘zoonoses ‘and ‘One Health’ is continuously being undertaken.

Laboratory Facilities in the Department: The laboratory is equipped with ultra modern facilities of Vitek 2, BacT Alert, MALDI-TOF, PCR machine, Real time PCR machine, Biosafety cabinet (Class II B2 with virus burn out unit and 100% exhaust), Sonicator, ELISA test reader, automated Gram staining machine, Gel documentation system , Inverted microscope, Dark field microscope, Fluorescent microscope , CO2 incubator, Deep freezers (-20 & -80oC), lyophilizer etc. It is actively conducting the research in the field of serology, molecular surveillance/epidemiology and genomics.

Diagnostic services offered by the department: The diagnostic services (serological and molecular) for the zoonotic diseases like brucellosis, leptospirosis, Scrub typhus, Q fever, listeriosis, Cysticercosis is offered.
