The Department of Veterinary Microbiology was established since the inception of the college in the year 1958 to impart undergraduate education. Initially only undergraduate teaching was undertaken. The postgraduate program in Veterinary Microbiology was incepted in 1995 and subsequently in Animal Biotechnology in 2007. The Ph.D program in Veterinary Microbiology was started in 2013. Currently, the department offers Undergraduate, Postgraduate, and Doctoral degree programs. The curriculum prepares students to meet their goals, which include professional careers in academic, clinical, and technical fields of Microbiology and Animal Biotechnology. So far 52 students have completed PG programs in Veterinary Microbiology and 19 in Animal Biotechnology. Five students have completed their Ph.D. and another one are undergoing Ph.D. program in Veterinary Microbiology.
The department undertakes time-bound research projects, in addition to the teaching and diagnostic services provided for diagnosing bacterial, viral, and fungal diseases of livestock and poultry.
Heads of the Department: Dr. S.L.Manjarekar, Dr. S.P.Phadke, Dr. M. S. Dhake, Dr. M. M. Kulkarni and Dr. R. S. Kolhe initially contributed significantly to the department's development. Later on, Dr. S. D. Harne geared up the developmental activities of the department. Subsequently, Dr. D. R. Kalorey played a key role in the overall development and upliftment of the department. Recently Dr. V.C. Ingle was superannuated in March 2020 and Dr.Shubhangi Warke took the charge of Head of the Department.
